Five tips for picking the right neighborhood when buying a home.

It can be hard to decide what to have for dinner, let alone the next place you’ll call home. Much like the choosing the right partner, it is a big decision that will greatly impact your daily life…for better or for worse!

Here are five important things to consider when choosing the right neighborhood.


1- Budget.

This may seem like a no-brainer, but we are not just talking about the price of the home. Property taxes and HOA fees should also be factored into your monthly budget. Property taxes tend to rise, so it is worthwhile to do some research on how they have increased over the past five years. 

2- Lifestyle.

What do you like to do? Do you like to walk to shops and restaurants? Or are you more of a quiet homebody? Is a family-friendly neighborhood a priority for you? There are so many factors that go into choosing a spot that fits your lifestyle. Make a list of everything that’s important to you and decide which aspects you simply can’t live without.

3- Current Community.

What is it that you love about your current community? And on the other side, what is lacking? Both are interesting questions to ask yourself when considering what you want in your new hood. Maybe you’ve always wanted to live near tennis courts. Or perhaps you enjoy a morning routine of walking your pup to the coffee shop. Factoring these small things into your decision can have a big effect on how content you are with your new location.

4- Get the Info.

There are many ways to find out about a neighborhood online. For example, most real estate sites have statistics that tell you how the zip code's crime rates measure up to the national average. If you want specifics, call the local police station. 

5- Market Conditions.

Everyone wants to get the most for their money. Doing some research on the property values of a neighborhood can give you a good sense of how your home’s value can grow in the future. Are new businesses being built? Does the city have plans to allow more housing developments? How has traffic changed in the area in the past five years? Are their other factors like city regulations that will change?

There is a lot to consider when choosing a new neighborhood, but don’t let it take the fun out of house hunting! List your priorities in order and decide what you’re willing to compromise on. There is no such thing as a perfect neighborhood. However, once you know what you want and you do your research, you’re sure to find your perfect. Happy house hunting!
